![]() After being attacked by a rogue military force, he is rescued by an armored flying dragon. The player controls Edge, a mercenary who encounters a mysterious girl named Azel in an Ancient Age excavation. Panzer Dragoon Saga (titled Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG in Japan) is a role-playing game (RPG) released for Saturn in 1998. Over the course of the series, a succession of characters ride mysterious armored flying dragons of extraordinary power, fighting to prevent humanity from reactivating the most destructive Ancient Age weapons and, ultimately, to destroy the remaining weapons and facilities of the Ancient Age so that humanity can be freed from the threat they pose. Various human factions use recovered Ancient Age technologies, such as ubiquitous floating military airships, to defend against the wild mutants and to wage war against each other. The mutated descendants of these creatures have merged into wild ecosystems, where they pose a continual threat to human civilization and serve as enemies encountered in the games. The Ancients used genetic engineering to create living weapons, which were unleashed in a cataclysmic war that nearly destroyed humanity. ![]() The Panzer Dragoon series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which humans have begun to recover technologies from the Ancient Age, a world-spanning, hyper-advanced civilization destroyed thousands of years before the events of the games. Saga is one of the most acclaimed Saturn games and is often listed among the greatest video games. The Panzer Dragoon games have received consistently positive reviews emphasizing their art design, visuals, sound design, and atmospheric settings. Each game follows a protagonist who rides an armored flying dragon, fighting human and monstrous enemies in a post-apocalyptic world. The games, save for Saga, are rail shooters. A remake of Panzer Dragoon was released in 2020, and a remake of Zwei has been announced. Spin-offs include Panzer Dragoon Mini (1996) for the handheld Game Gear in Japan. The fourth, Panzer Dragoon Orta (2002), was developed by Sega's Smilebit team for the Xbox. The first three games- Panzer Dragoon (1995), Panzer Dragoon II Zwei (1996), and Panzer Dragoon Saga (1998)-were produced by Sega's Team Andromeda for the Sega Saturn. As you go through the game you will also be able to pick up gene bases which power up each of the dragon types to a stronger version of itself.Panzer Dragoon is a series of video games developed by Sega. The heavy wing has powerful laser blasts but slow movement and the base wing is a mix of the two. The glide wing is a light dragon with weak weapons but lots of speed. ![]() And if that weren't enough options, the game lets you morph your dragon at will into one of three types of mounts. You also have the ability to ram objects with the dragon or launch a special berserk attack. You can use Orta's basic gun by tapping the button or a homing laser by holding a button in, painting a couple of targets and letting go. You'll spend half your time focusing on shooting stuff and the other half figuring out how best to shoot it. Put on top of that the fact that you have to duck and weave through the scenery and dodge projectiles and you've got a wonderfully complex game. It also allows you to control where you are looking, in a 360-degree circle. The game plays from a third-person perspective, allowing you to control your dragon's banking movements and speed. But Orta's return to the sub-genre is a good thing, because of Sega's approach. This genre disappeared with the advent of the fully controllable first-person shooter. Instead you sit atop a car, train, rail, or, in this case, a dragon, and shoot at stuff like you're in a shooting gallery. Basically it means you have no real control of what direction you are heading. Panzer Dragoon Orta is a third-person rail-shooter, and more than likely, most gamers won't have heard of this short-lived sub-genre.
